12 Weeks of Christmas {Week 2}

Alright, now that I have my list of things we want to do and things we will need to do all done I am moving on to week 2. I am keeping my lists of things to do on my phone, so much easier, no chance of losing it. I always have it, etc.
I also wrote some down though, things we need to decide on as a family.

Week 2 for me is about budgeting, and scheduling! Now that we have some ideas of what we want to do, we can narrow the budget down and start getting things on the schedule (flexible) before things get crazy!

There are a lot of methods to budgeting, or saving year round for Christmas.

Whichever way you do your budgeting, having it in place is kind of freeing and a great guideline to get started!

And if you are like me and don't like to cross stuff off in your planner, you can print off blank calendar pages and use them until things are more set in stone. We have to wait for basketball schedules, family parties we aren't hosting, etc.

Planners make me happy! Here's why

6 Reasons I use a planner!

https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/brittaniegordon1229
1. I don't over schedule!
If I make plans without my planner handy, there are bound to be overlapping things going on where I don't want them, creating stress and dysfunction.

2. I am a better friend and mom!
I don't want to be that flaky mom/friend that is rescheduling (often) because I didn't use my planner.  It still happens when things come up last minute, but I wouldn't want it to be a regular thing.

3. I save money!
I can group my things that need to be done in town, saving me the extra trips, and wasting gas!

4. I do my job better!
I can prep ahead of time and spend 5 minutes instead of waiting until it's sprung on me and spend way more time, and sometimes money! Creating less stress because I can be prepared!

5. I have more time for important things!
By combining all of the above, I leave time for family, and I make time by keeping things streamlined and grouped together, like errands.

6. It makes me HAPPY!
I am a nerd, no shame in that. I love the stickers, the great pens and I feel good knowing I have my act together (a little)

I love and USE an Erin Condren Life Planner
I can't wait to share more about how I use it!

Home Management Binder to Personal Planner

I've been using my Home Management Binder for a few years now.
I love it, I don't know what I would do without it, but it's also HUGE and so much of it I don't need everyday. I made a change about a year ago to a smaller planner that will fit in my purse, granted I use a pretty large purse.

Recently I have been needing my HMB less and my planner like crazy!
I need to separate them and keep my HMB in the cupboard for emergencies and back-up, instead of for everyday.

For everyday use I am going to use my small planner. I am currently using this Martha Stewart one
It's not holding up THAT well, the edges are a little rough looking. I am hoping to be able to splurge on a Filofax soon. If only I could decide on a color, and then find a deal!
I am leaning towards this color, unless I can find the yellow somewhere!

I need to split my sections up into 2, some for my HMB, things I don't need everyday, or even every week. Then the stuff I cannot make it through the week without!

I could make this a crazy long post, I'll keep it as short as I can!

What I am keeping in my HMB?
~Kids School Calendar
~Kids School info
Financial Folder with
~Checkbook and Register
~List of the accounts with #'s and phone numbers for company
~Savings envelopes
~Monthly Debt Goals. I keep track of what we pay off each month.
Must Have Info
~Personal info, like SSN, birth certificates etc.
~Immunization Records
Goals
~Financial Goals
~Life Goals

What I am moving to my planner?
~Wipe Clean Weekly Menu
~Daily Chores
~Daily To Do list
~Meal Planning Section
~Daily Schedule
~Calendar
And a few more I will be sharing soon!

And I may have been going a little crazy with the stamps and stickers, but it just makes it more fun to look at, and believe me, I have to look at it a TON! I have lack of sleep, new baby brain and am SO forgetful these days! There are SO many cute stickers and options for planners right now,  I am loving these!

I can't wait to share some more planner stuff in a few days!

How I organize life, and a little giveaway!

For right now anyway!
I would be totally lost without these 3 things.
-Planner with Calendar
-Frixion Pen
-Washi Tape

If you are looking for a little Management Binder, this might be a good place to start! It holds the 5.5x8.5" papers! I picked it up at Staples with the calendar inserts too. You can get SO many printables online too. Target has a number of less expensive binders in this size also. It fits in my purse, I take it everywhere. I need it on a daily basis, multiple times a day.

I know the Filofax and MomAgenda are popular, Erin Condren has some super cute ones. I needed something NOW and not a budget buster either, but it had to be cute! So here it is, my little Martha Stewart cuteness. Did it come with anything, NO. Not a thing. I didn't pay for a bunch of stuff I am not going to use though either. I only bought what I needed to start. Then I have also picked up some pages on etsy. Finding this size is a little trickier but there are some great ones out there!

I mostly use the calendar and the list pages.

I make our meal plan for the month and then use the washi tape and just stick the meal on the day, I can move it if something comes up, or I forget to thaw something.
(cause that NEVER happens right?!)

The lists are ongoing, never ending and always half done.

I swear by these pens! They make my list and calendar planning SO much easier. They write super smooth, don't smudge (much) and they are erasable!! The write like a ball point, look like a super fine felt and erase so well!

I love them so much I want to share some!
Colors may vary!

I will give y'all 2 whole weekends to enter! Share with your friends!

Budgeting #2 Home Managment Binder

How we organize our bills to pay

I would be completely lost without our "plan". We use a spreadsheet on our computer, I know some people prefer a hard copy but for us, the computer version is easier because I pay most of our bills online. But I do like some hard copy stuff too! You never know when you will need it.
In the finances section of my HMB we have a few sections:
1. REFERENCE

~ A list of ALL of our accounts, with the account number and customer service phone number. Even if we do not use them right now, or haven't in a while. I keep the info for about a year or so just in case there is an issue down the road.
One day I might figure out an easier way to share these printables!

~ The due date for each account we have, everything from credit card to water bill. I'd hate to get a late fee for being 1 day late!
~ Calendar with paydays listed. Hubby gets paid every other week so we split things up in a spreadsheet by paycheck.

~ Folder pocket for incoming bills to be paid.

2. THE PLAN

~Our Snowball plan with all our debts listed in order to be paid off, so I don't have to re figure it every month, it shouldn't change without there being something major.

~Paycheck Plan (IF I get around to printing it out, usually don't) This is what we use to decide what bills get paid with each of hubby's checks. Makes my Friday bill paying so  much easier to already know what to expect, I just match it with what came in the mail, or e-statements.

~List of upcoming irregular expenses. Things like drivers license renewal, car tags, swimming lessons, sports fee's all those things that can add up!

3. CASH ENVELOPES

~I just use some dollar store school envelopes and a page protector that is made for 4x6 photos, it holds them well, I can see them and get to them fine. But I would like to get something like these, or maybe make them in my free time (haha)

But it would also need a 3 hole punch, or some easy way to keep them in my Home Management Binder.

4. GROCERIES

~This one might be getting cut soon as I have less and less time. But if you have time and ambition to keep it up it's super helpful.
I have a list of our frequent purchased items per month. So I know about what our grocery bill should be each month if we I stick to it at the store. It makes it a little easier to plan grocery shopping if I know something is expensive I can split them up between to the 2 grocery trips each month and not have 1 be way more than the other. I like consistency. Knowing the approximate price for our usual things helps me to know when is the right time to stock up. If it's a great deal I would buy more and save a little the next month.I have a spreadsheet with all the groceries. I used to just use our receipt and update the prices for the store I went to. I pretty much only go to 1 or 2 stores now that so many are price matching. That has really helped too.

~I also have an envelope for grocery coupons (SO few and far between for stuff we buy)

My Detailed Daily Schedule

I posted my shortened list yesterday but thought I would confirm how crazy I really am and share my detailed list today.

I only use this for the week, weekends are a lot more relaxed in the morning around here.
And some days the only thing that works is the time I get up and the time I go to bed.
I'll probably be re-making my Weekly Chores so they all look pretty together, cause that's important right?

And I am told these are printing out the right size for a page protector if you right click and save.. not that I would expect anyone else's schedule to be exactly like mine.
I made this using MyMemoriesSuite with NO extra add ons, just the basic program. It's inexpensive and I have a coupon code if anyone wants to use it!
You can get the program here.
and the coupon code is STMMMS87586

Making a daily schedule

Who has a daily schedule? Who loves them? Who wants one?
I LOVE having a plan and knowing what my day will (hopefully) hold!

I'm working on revamping my HMB for the new year. I think I'll add a few more things to it,
 including a reusable daily schedule.
Having a morning plan and daily schedule that we follow loosely helps us make sure we get everything done we need to and out the door in time for school in the mornings and dinner on the table before 8pm.

I have my schedule broken up into 3 sections. Before School, during school and after school.

I have my own schedule, it's kinda crazy and not nearly as free as the kids routine but it helps me make sure I stay on task and get everything done! I think it took me just about a year of tweaking it to get it right and some days it just doesn't happen, like now, during Christmas break when no one but hubby is going anywhere there are a few things we skip and we do breakfast a little later, no homework, lots of free time!

I made mine by thinking about how my perfect, average day would go.
I made lists of
~Things I would want to get done before the kids were up
~Things I needed to do with and for the kids between waking up and getting them out the door
~The things I wanted to do when it was just the baby and I (I can still call him a baby even if he is 3 right?!)
~Then the after school business of homework, playtime and getting dinner ready.

I ended up with a detailed, every 15-30 min in the morning list (this is an abbreviated list).  Because I know what they are after doing them a while. But I still like the action of crossing something off a list. I made this and will keep a few days worth in a page protector in my HMB and use wet erase markers.

By now I am SURE 90% of y'all think I am a nutter and the rest might understand how much easier it can make this type A's day go!

I know these types of schedules aren't for everyone, but for me they work. I like seeing everything I've done that day and know that even when I feel like I can look around and not see anything I have done there is a whole list of things I did do.

I'll share my detailed morning to do list soon.
This all goes along with my Weekly Cleaning Schedule too!
And if anyone can share how to make this a "printable" I'd be happy to share :)

Home Management Binders

I have shared some of my HMB pages before
but I feel like I need to work on it again, and add some!
I pretty much re-did it last year but so much has changed and PINTEREST has provided some amazing resources! I was mixing HMB ideas all over on my boards, finally gave up and made a HMB board HERE.

Right now my HMB has these sections
~Bills/Financial
~Groceries/Coupons
~Housekeeping
~Kids/Records

I want to add
~72 hour pack details (and get it done)
~Reading List (books, devotional and scripture)
~Goals
~Schedules/Calendar
I have a Calendar but with the kids getting older and more sports
I need something else, I feel horrible and missed something this last weekend!

I didn't really want to do my whole binder over again, but the one I have is just about broken at the edges and  it's way over full. I am going to be trying out some of the printables I've found on Pinterest and spruce it up.

Hope I can find a cute binder like these 2!

Fall Cleaning

It's like Spring Cleaning but better, at least in my opinion. My reward for getting it done is usually some yummy smellin' pumpkin-y candles and/or a Vanilla Chai Latte,
and I prefer those over spring/summer smells
My favorite candle right now is Bath and Body Works Caramel Pumpkin Latte!

The first day of Fall is Sept. 23rd this year! That is our little Finnley's birthday! So I am not starting then, and the next day is his party! And I am pretty sure we will need Sunday to recover.
But Monday I am planning on getting my week long FALL CLEANING started!
I have done this every year for a while, and it's always a little different. Maybe last years, or the years before plan would work for you. Find them HERE. If you need time to clean Article Writing Services will make sure you still have free content for your blog.

I won't actually start cleaning until then, but for now I need a plan and to make sure we have all the supplies so I can actually get it done without any extra trips to the store!

Here is my plan:
Monday~ Kitchen
Tuesday~Family Room, Living Room
Wednesday~Bathrooms
Thursday~Bedrooms
Friday~Anything inside I missed the other days/outside
Saturday~Garage/outside (depending on weather)
Sunday~(wrapping up outside)

It will take me a few days, but I will have my notepad, or phone, and make lists for each room of the things that need to be done. Sometimes it's just weird little things I wouldn't put on the everyday list or a generic deep cleaning list.

But a few things make the list just about every time. The usual are
Touch up paint
Touch up moulding
Vacuum vents
Cobb webs
I can pretty much figure all the rooms will need this done,
moulding painting is one of my least favorite things to do.

If you fall clean, what is on your list?

I'll have a list for Kitchen's soon!

Back to School Organization

Feeling a little rushed now! Just over 2 weeks until the first day for our kiddos and I feel like our current routines are just NOT going to work! Hoping to have a schedule worked out and get a week in of practice before school really starts.

I have already been getting up an hour or so earlier than the kids, well most days anyway, so I have time to prep breakfast and get as much done before the day starts. If these kids wake up any earlier I might have to change it to a bedtime routine instead.
We haven't really had a breakfast schedule like we do for dinner, but I think we might need to try one this year, and especially since I am not really a fan of cereal for the kids, not very often anyway.
I'm thinking
Mondays~Pancakes, fruit and sausage.. everyone needs Monday to be a good day!
Tuesdays~Oatmeal and stuff
Wednesday~Yogurt and fruit or granola
Thursdays~Waffles with peanut butter and fruit
Fridays~Cereal and fruit
Our kids LOVE this chocolate PB, and I like that it is better calorie and fat wise than the regular pb!

I am hoping I can make things easier and do most of the prep work ahead of time, like cutting all the fruit ahead of time and making the pancakes and freeze them. And keeping small things for the oatmeal so it's not getting everything out, just a little basket with little containers instead of the bag of brown sugar, because kids and bags of sugar do not mix in the morning!

Snacks could easily get out of control if I just let the kids have whatever they want. So I need to have stuff organized and easy for them to access (and easy for me to manage what they are getting)  I liked Real Simple Magazines idea about keeping all the snacks in one spot.
and already having stuff pre portioned out. Those single serving size snacks are so expensive when I could just put them in separate bags and save a bunch! I think giving the kids choices makes it easier for me and them, no fighting, no "I don't like that" problems.  We don't really do cookies or sweets here very often, but I don't want to restrict it so much that they don't know how to make good choices either.
So I will probably make certain things a 1x a week treat, they can pick the
day but I am not stocking those up everytime they are empty.
I will work on snack organization and share what I come up with.. I'm pretty sure these will be involved

I like that they are re-usable and kid sized, and not breakable! And I am totally wishing I would have kept those plastic baby food containers now.

I plan on having a LOT of snacks ready so the kids can just pick out what they want in their lunchbox too and I will make the main part. I think they will do a better job of eating it if they pick it out.

I can tell already I will be adding another to do one day a week in my HMB!

Better

I said the other day how I was SO behind on housework, well I still am a little but by the end of the week I will be caught up! (thank goodness)
I love that my Home Management Binder can help me get back on track in 1 week (or less) Having designated things to do each day of the week really helps me make sure nothing gets skipped and nothing ever really gets too dirty that it takes more than a few minutes!  Laundry has been a total pain lately, the kids dressers are over full because we have crazy weather, 70 one day freezing overnight! I am ready to pack all the sweaters away already!!

Meal planning

I usually stock up when there are things on sale that I know we will use. And this week that is coming in handy. I went grocery shopping but didn't take a list because I hadn't planned anything, that was a week and a half ago. Luckily I hadn't been slacking for too long and we still have plenty of groceries for the week and I don't have to go to the grocery store again!  If I do this right we shouldn't have any reason to be eating out at all this entire week!  Our weekday meals have got to be easy and not time consuming! Between T-ball and dance class we have 1 free night a week. So those other 4 nights can get really hectic if I don't have a plan and most of the work done ahead of time!  Things like browning all of the ground turkey at once (and then freezing it in meal size bags) saves a ton of time later on, and we can buy the big packages and get a better deal per pound!
If things are on track we have a few bags of hamburger, turkey and chicken breast already cooked in the freezer all the time. I have a daily plan in my HMB and one of the first things is to check the meal plan and see if I need to thaw anything.
The crock pot is another thing we use a lot, not as much in the spring and summer but fall and winter it is easily a every other day thing!  Once the weather is a little more reliable we grill pretty much everything!

I haven't gotten into Once A Month Cooking, but I can imagine I will have to soon! Right now we have 1 in school and 2 in activities, next year it will be even worse (worse as in busy, glad they enjoy doing stuff though!) OAMC info here.

I did get all the Spring/Easter stuff put away and everything dusted today. I am not putting anything else out until I am caught up on house work, that is good motivation for me since it's pretty empty without it!  But I did get something new in the mail the other day and it needed a place to be until I get the next bins out.  So I cheated a little!

I have a weakness for old pictures! No idea who any of these people are since I bought the pictures! But I love them. I love the way they look, how they feel,  and the sweet stories our older kids make up about the people in the pictures!

Office In A Cupboard

We don't have a dedicated room as an office at our house, and I am just not a fan of looking at office type stuff, so having it out in one of the rooms really just wouldn't work for us. We used to keep one side of the pantry for office stuff.. you can see part of that disaster HERE.

Wow, SO glad we got away from that! But then it was all a big mess in a box and hard to find anything!
I didn't take before pictures (because I do these things on a whim I guess?!) But I can say this cupboard was full of pie plates, pans and other cooking and baking stuff we don't use very often. So I purged stuff  I know we haven't used in over a year (and no plans to in the immediate future) and since I have been trying to replace Teflon coated stuff with cast iron, I just donated the pans, and found a better spot for the stuff that was left.

I used to be a office supply hoarder, I still have my moments!  But now I try to only keep pens I LOVE and not all pens, and I tried to minimize everything, like no regular stapler, I just found a mini one, and since we rarely staple, it should be just fine!

I have a shelf for HMB stuff and supplies, with some room leftover!
The the next shelf I keep our camera's and stuff, phonebook and printer paper on, then the most used shelf is the bottom! Stores my HMB, a basket with all our pens and scissors, cd's and cases and a cup for change. I left room on one side for our laptops, I like to have a safe place for them to go when we have a lot of people over.. kids especially!

And on the inside of the door I added a sheet of tin (I think) It's magnetic but not very attractive, so I added a cutesy piece of paper over it. I keep frequent used numbers there, a magnetic tin that holds thumb drives and a container for chalk for the pantry chalkboard, which is right next to it, oh and a magnetic tape measure, which might be the most frequently used thing in there!

The cabinet underneath has always stored our printer and filing stuff, but I organized the cords and stuff that comes with everything so we can get to it when we need it. The black box stores cards, envelopes, extra pens and garage sale stickers!

I really love that we can close those 2 cabients and not have to look at ugly office stuff! Best move of stuff yet!

Home Management Binder Section 3: Groceries and Meal Planning

The next section I am working on is groceries and meal planning! One of the first pages in my HMB (it's not even in a section) is our Menu for the week (or 2 weeks)  I just printed this off and it is in a page protector so I can write on it with the dry erase markers and wipe it off if I need to adjust it or every other week when it's old news! The reason I have it in the front (right after my calendar) is because one of the first things I need to do every morning is make sure something doesn't need to be thawed for dinner, so having that right in front of me is just easy!

Since using coupons better this year is one of my goals I have to find a way to fit a easy way to use them in this folder. I went to office depot looking for something and spotted these page protector things that are for baseball cards (I think) but I am using them for COUPONS. Each page has 9 pockets, I can break each page into isles or grocery sections. Health. Dairy, Paper, Meat, Produce, Breakfast, Canned, Frozen and everything else!  I set this up a few days ago and was able to use it already on Sunday! So far so good, and I got a whole pack of these for just a couple dollars so if I get more than 1 page can handle I can use another.

Then I have a chart of most of the groceries we buy, the regular price at the 2 grocery stores we go to and sale price that comes up at other stores (to price match). Sometimes you have to buy something even if it is not on sale, but I wanted to have an idea of the lowest price it goes down to so I know when to stock up (and hope I have coupons for it then). I am always adding to this list and adjusting the prices as they go up and down, it is not fun or easy, but I do think it is worth it to really know how much stuff is, it helps me plan our grocery budget. It really is a LOT of work but I have been able to plan a week worth of the most inexpensive meals when needed because I had the handy little chart. It really isn't something that I enjoy AT ALL and you can't really do it from home whenever you want. I think the easiest way for me to keep track of it is to just make a quick note on the price from my receipt and do major updates when I can.

This part is new for me, a record of what we have stocked up! Some things I can guarantee we will use before it expires so I am trying to keep a couple months worth of our usual groceries, buying them on sale so we can wait if they don't go on sale again for a while. I don't want to just go out and buy it all at once and not get the best deal, so I am slowly buying when stuff is on sale. What we have so far I was able to get most for about 50% off the regular price! Still have a long way to go but I figure if something is on a GREAT sale I can spend $20 out of our grocery budget each pay period and stock up a little. It shouldn't take that long to stock up completely I hope.

I also keep the weekly circulars and my grocery list in the folder pocket.. I make my grocery list on Mondays usually, but then add to it all week as we run out of stuff. I use the circulars to see if anything I need is on sale and take them with me to the store since they price match! I am not a fan of dragging the kids in and out of more than 1 store, especially in this rainy cruddy weather!  I also keep another paper with what I needed from each circular and the coupons they match (if any) and what page they are on.. Nothing is worse than a grumpy checker waiting while you browse the ad's again looking for something :)

I used to have a section for recipe's but honestly I rarely cook from a recipe and when I do it is from a cook book or online.. if it's online I just print it out or bring the laptop over. I have a BIG box of recipes to try someday.. they are organized but I don't need to see them everyday so my HMB is just not the place for them.

The next section is kid stuff!

HMB re-do section 1

I decided to grab supplies before everyone else starts with the organizing too, found some cute paper and a big binder!  I use folders instead of page dividers because some of the folders I just don't need all year, like one that has Christmas ideas, gift list and sizes for kids in it.. I don't need that in my everyday binder until about October, so using the folders it's easy to just pop the whole folder in when the time comes.

This is my first section, the financial section of the HMB. It holds a LOT of info and it is one of my most used sections!  First I have our paycheck plans, hubby gets paid every 2 weeks so I like to have stuff split up as close to even as can be while everything gets paid on time.

Then a list of all our monthly bills and the approximate amount for each month and the due date, this chart makes planning what to pay with what paycheck SO much easier! I have them sorted by due date, with the name and amount.

Next is all of our account numbers and phone numbers for the companies we use, just in case something did happen, it is all together and easy to find. Everything from insurance to credit cards, these are not in any specific order, but maybe they should be!

This is new and I am hoping it will work ok. I just used a page protector and these small colorful envelopes I found at the Dollar Store. I labeled one for Groceries, Gas, Savings, Fun and leftover (which gets paid straight to some debt). So after I pay the bills, I will be using the envelopes and cash with the amount set for each thing, I am so used to using the debit card this will be a bit of a adjustment, but I hope the adjustment helps us eliminate our debt!

It's not too much different then last year, but there are FEWER lines on the page with all our accounts.. I think that is a good sign!

And here is my pencil pouch. Cleaned out for the new year, going to try to keep it clutter free! I keep my checkbook and register in there, a couple dry erase pens, some regular pens and a calculator!

The next section I will be working on is groceries and meal planning! Since using coupons better this year is one of my goals I have to find a way to fit a easy way to use them in this folder.. Hopefully it only takes me a couple nap times to get it set!

2011 Home Management Binder re-do!

Over the last few days I think I have gone through every cupboard and drawer making sure we don't start the new year with stuff we aren't using or that doesn't fit. It feels SO good to be done with it and starting out fresh for the new year!

Decided I need to work on my Home Management Binder while I am sprucing stuff up around here and re-organizing. There are some pages that are just not relevant anymore and there are a few pages and sections I need to add to work on my goals for the year.  I don't want to rush things or make it feel like a chore because I love and use my HMB everyday!

I posted about it before HERE, but that has been almost an entire year ago! It sure doesn't feel like it has been a year!  We have been getting more and more busy around here lately and I am definitely going to need a calendar page that is big and easy to read! Tomkat Studio has free monthly printable calendar pages that are CUTE! I will for sure be using the calendars to plan when we need to start some seeds, and HOPE I can keep a few plants alive!

I said before we are working on eliminating our debt.. I am thinking of trying the envelope system and see how that works for us. Using a 0 balance budget will be a hard adjustment but I think we can make it
work, at least try it for a few months and see how it goes. I need to make a spot in my HMB for our envelopes!

Using coupons more and matching with the ads is also one of my goals! I need to find a way to organize coupons/current ads in my HMB to save the most combining them AND not taking up a ton of space!

I'm going to do a HMB post once a week (maybe twice) until I'm done.. but supplies are a must.. and the prettier it is, the more likely I am to use it everyday the way I want to! When I make it into town again I will be looking for these things (well the ones we don't already have)

~A binder, probably a 3" one, our 2" is about to tear into 2 pieces and it's too small!

Home Managment Binder

Or whatever you call yours! Control Journal, household planner.. They have many names and we all use them just a little differently! Mine is a lifesaver.. I use it everyday, and the days I don't use it, life seems much more chaotic! One of my goals is to become even more organized than I am already, my HMB really helps but I think I can make it even more efficient!

Spring will be here before we know it and I REALLY feel like I need to get my HMB back in order and updated and pretty before the chaos of spring cleaning and playing outside starts! When I first started mine I had NO idea what I was doing... and I wing it now!

I write HUGE so I knew one of the purse or wallet size ones was not going to cut it. I finally ended up with a 3" 3 ring binder. If you don't have one yet, I would suggest making a list of all the pages, folders, sections you want before buying your binder.
Speaking of sections.. mine is always getting new sections added to it, ripped out, changed or moved. My HMB is ALWAYS changing! Every time life changes so does my binder, well, within a couple weeks anyway!

There are no rules to how many or how few sections, folders or even how many binders you have! Some ladies I know have 1 for each child, 1 for each season and 1 for general items.. I would be overwhelmed with that, but our kids are young still and not involved in that many activities.. I am sure they will each need their own eventually!
Right now I have 4 sections
~Finances/Budgeting
~Grocery Shopping/Cooking
~Kids
~Housekeeping

~Finances~ I used to worry about missing a payment or not getting a statement, not anymore! The first page in my finances folder is a list of ALL of our accounts (everything from mortgage to garbage service) With 3 columns. Account, amount due per month and due date. I have them organized by due date. I keep most of my pages in page protectors so I can write on the outside and wipe it off when I am done. So when I make a payment for the month I just cross it off.. haven't missed one yet! The next page is similar.. with all the accounts, acct numbers and Phone Numbers for the companies (Who has time to look through the phone book or find the account number ?!). The following page is for accounts that have a balance every month (like the mortgage and car payments) I update it every 2 or 3 months with the current payoff, so I can SEE the number going down! The last page (right now) is savings.. Just my own record of savings rather than a paper statement each month from the bank!
~Grocery Shopping/Cooking~ Before kids I had no problem running to the store before dinner to grab a missing ingredient, or for that matter, just getting take out for us instead. Trying to spend less on eating out means more home cooking and meal planning for me. Loading all 3 kids up to go to the grocery store is a HUGE TASK and spendy since the grocery store is just over 10 miles away, so now I Meal plan! My first page in the grocery folder USED to be the meal plan for the next 2 weeks (again in a page protector, easy to change and cross off every 2 weeks)I have recently changed and instead of trying to figure out 14 different meals with 14 different ingredients every 2 weeks, I have started making the same things for dinner every Mon-Fri, of course they are hubby's favorites and are not expensive so it really works all around. Some people meal plan for 1 week, 1 month some even a whole year! This new method has been working great for us so far. I still have the weekends to do more elaborate cooking or try new recipe's! And I am saving because I am not buying nearly as many different items! The second page is a master list of ALL the items we use, some only a couple times a year and some every few days. I keep it in a page protector (of course) and when it is getting low I mark it on the page protector so when I make the grocery list I don't have to dig through stuff to see what we need! I buy the same things for our Mon-Fri meals and have a list of the other items, this is a HUGE time saver for me. Of course the list changes, baby food has been on and off, produce that is in season is always changing, and as the kids start to try new things and like them we add them. I keep the lists on a spreadsheet so it is easy to add or remove items and I just print a new one when needed. The next part is a empty page protector with all the cutout recipe's I want to try, when I am planning for weekends and the grocery shopping it is easy to pull one out!The last thing is a spreadsheet with the same items from the master grocery list and 3 columns, 1 for each of the major grocery stores we have. Each item has the price for each store (which are always changing, it's a lot of work but worth it!) So when I make my grocery list I figure which of the 3 will cost the least for the entire list, taking into account sale prices. I know I could save a little by going to each store but I have a hard time dragging all 3 kids to 3 different stores to save a little.
~The Kids Section is Pretty simple, they each have their own folder. Each folder has a paper with all their accounts (bank/savings), their SSN in it, birth certificate.. I know sounds like a identity theft dream come true, but I still feel safer knowing I can get to them all together and quickly in an emergency! The other items in their folders are their medical records and school schedule for the oldest.
~Housekeeping~ Anything I can do to make it take less time I am wiling to try! I have had the same housekeeping method for about 5 years now and it gets faster every week! I have 1 page for each day of the week (well Mon-Fri, weekends are for relaxing after all!) So I split up the house into 5, well really its more like 4 for me and the 5Th is just getting stuff I missed and decluttering or a project. The first step is making a list of the room and the things that should be done every week!Mondays I clean the kitchen, not just dishes and counters, I clean the microwave, clean out the fridge and really try to deep clean everything.. it only takes a few minutes if you do it every week, the stuff just doesn't have time to get that dirty!Tuesdays I clean the Family room, Living room and the guest bathroom.Wednesdays I do the 2 full baths.Thursdays I do the bedrooms.Fridays I try to tidy the laundry room and organize/ declutter something. Often we have 3 day weekends so I try to make sure that stuff on Friday wont be a ton of work the next week if it gets skipped. Each one of these is in a page protector, I used to cross stuff off as I went but now I don't need to, I pretty much have it all memorized. Now I don't list all the times I wipe the counter, table or kids clean.. I don't have a list for general tidying.. I do the dishes, laundry and a general tidy everyday.. that is good enough for me.
That is the main thing I use in the housekeeping section, but I do have another couple pages, 1 for Spring Cleaning, 1 for Fall Cleaning, and 1 for cleaning supply recipe's. I make our Laundry soap, dishwasher powder and febreeze type product.

Calender Page... I forgot I do have a calender page in the front. Just printed off and plain, waiting to be filled in!

The other necessity for me is a pencil pouch! Between dry erase pens (mini sized for me) a calculator, regular pens and stamps I don't know what I would do without my pencil pouch!

I am excited to make it pretty.. its been awfully plain lately, but I am thinking red/white gingham with some cute fruits.. I figure if I have to see it everyday I might as well spend a couple bucks and make it pretty! I will post some pictures once I'm done!

Some other sections that I don't personally use but are good ideas ~Birthday/Anniversary page (family and friends important dates) ~Gift ideas.. I can see where this goes well with the previous! ~Take out folder. A folder with their favorite restaurant #'s and favorite items.

What Sections do y'all have and love? I would love some suggestions for new sections!
